The Environment Kato Symi, Vianos, Heraklion Crete
"The pine forest of Kato Simi is one of the largest forests in Crete!"
Kato Symi belongs geographically to the southern mountain range of Dikti and, as is commonly said by Cretans, has the largest forest cover in the prefecture of Heraklion, since the famous pine forest is located in its area.
The wild flora is rich and often unique. Pine trees and wild cherry trees are found at the foot of Dikti. Higher up, there are holm oaks, cedars, oaks, endemic orchids, thyme, sage, the unique dictum’s, and hundreds of other aromatic plants and herbs fill the air with their scent, mainly from April to September. It is also a habitat and refuge for birds of prey.
Many vultures have found refuge here in the gorges and have chosen the gorge of "Kapnistis" for their breeding. A pair of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos, a protected species) frequents and has been recorded in the same place, as well as three species of hawks: the rock eagle, the harrier, and the scops owl.
The buzzard, the kestrel, the weasel, the hare, the partridge, invertebrates, and insects all have their place and complement the natural landscape of Dikti.
